According to a report by the Associated Press, the landscape of sports betting in the United States is undergoing significant expansion following a landmark Supreme Court ruling last year that lifted the nationwide ban on sports gambling.
States such as Montana, Iowa, and Indiana are poised to join the ranks of those that have already legalized sports betting, including Nevada, Delaware, New Jersey, Mississippi, West Virginia, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. This wave of legalization is anticipated to continue, with momentum building as more states recognize the potential economic benefits of regulated sports wagering.
Despite the estimated $150 billion annually wagered on sports in the United States, the majority of these bets are currently placed illegally through unregulated bookmakers or offshore betting sites. The move towards legalization seeks to bring these activities into the mainstream, providing consumer protections and generating tax revenue for state governments.
In Montana and Iowa, bipartisan support for gambling bills has propelled them through the legislative process, with both states awaiting the signature of their respective governors. Indiana, meanwhile, is poised to be among the first states to legalize sportsbooks in 2019, pending approval from Governor Eric Holcomb.
However, the path to legalization is not without its challenges. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has yet to publicly comment on the proposed legislation, casting uncertainty over the future of sports betting in the state.
The Supreme Court’s landmark decision on May 14, 2019, marked a pivotal moment in American gambling history, effectively overturning a federal law enacted in 1992 that prohibited sports betting in most states. Since then, several states have moved swiftly to capitalize on the newfound opportunity, embracing regulated sports betting as a means of stimulating economic growth and addressing consumer demand.
Currently, residents of six states, in addition to Nevada and New Mexico, where betting is permitted at casinos without explicit state approval, enjoy access to legal sports wagering. As the legalization trend continues to gain momentum, the landscape of sports betting in the United States is poised for further evolution in the years to come.
