This year’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) almost made history by featuring the largest number of participants, but it fell short of breaking the record.
In 2006, as many as 8,773 set their minds on the WSOP Main Event prize. It was expected that the figure wouldn’t be topped as this was the last year in which participants could buy-in after winning an online satellite tournament.
However, the record has been put at risk this year with 8,569 players paying $10,000 to join the event — which was just 204 less than the 2006 figure.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that this year’s winner will receive $10 million out of an $80.5 million prize pool. In addition, the second, third, fourth, and fifth place will earn a total of $15.2 million.
The top prize is the second-largest in WSOP history, after a $12 million payout which American poker player Jamie Gold took home after winning the 2006 tournament.
The Main Event will finish on July 16 with contenders from all 50 states and 87 countries.
