A district court judge has upheld the decision of the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) that permitted the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska to operate a casino in Carter Lake.
The NIGC granted the federally recognized tribe the right to launch Prairie Flower Casino in 2007, prompting Iowa and Nebraska lawmakers to sue for closing the casino.
District Court Judge Stephanie Ross ruled Monday to back the NIGC’s decision, explaining that “plaintiffs admit this would have had a negative economic impact on the Tribe.”
Casino gambling is illegal in Nebraska, while Iowa already has three commercial casinos near Carter Lake.
