The only federally recognized tribe in North Carolina might commence offering sports wagering, awaiting Governor Roy Cooper’s approval.
In early April, Senate Bill 154, which permits the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to provide horse and sports betting, got a 42-7 vote.
On Monday, the North Carolina General Assembly adopted the measure by a large margin as well, with the bill receiving a 90-27 vote.
The SB 154 is now headed towards the governor’s desk. His spokesman Ford Porter stated that Cooper would analyze it before reaching a decision.
The governor has to decide whether he will sign the bill into law, reject it, or allow it to get turned into law without signing.
If passed, the measure would restrict sports wagering to tribal lands and would not permit mobile wagering.
It is expected that North Carolina will earn between $1 million and $1.5 million in revenue from legalizing sports and horse wagering at two locations — Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino.
