New York Senate Approves Mobile Sports Betting

July 03, 2019

Mobile sports betting moves forward after getting approved by the New York State Senate.

On Monday, the State Senate voted in favor of the legislation S17 that would permit digital wagering in New York. If passed, it would also authorize betting at sports venues, and racetracks would be allowed to introduce betting kiosks.

S17 received a 57-5 vote in the Senate, but it is still to be put to the vote at the State Assembly.

With legislative sessions concluding on June 19, it remains to be seen whether Carl Heastie, the Assembly Speaker, might forego bringing up the bill in favor of other issues.

Senator Joseph Addabbo, a proponent of the bill, says that he might get the Speaker to bring it up on the floor if he proves that the majority are in favor of it.

Just last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo expressed that the state constitution would need to undergo changes because of the bill, which would lead to a voter referendum.

Previously, Gov. Cuomo supported the New York State Gaming Commission decision to approve sports betting in four upstate casinos, saying that it would strengthen the state’s gaming industry.
