We haven’t really seen Poseidon depicted as half-fish before, but here he is looking like a mermaid on the left-hand side. He is definitely the Commander of Tridents though, and this release is obviously inspired by Push Gaming’s Mystery Museum. To rub it in, Backseat Gaming has included a Razor Shark-like symbol, but Commander of Tridents does add a few innovative elements to the mix.
The Mystery Gate symbols always nudge fully in place, and they reveal a matching pay symbol or a Golden Chest symbol. If the latter is the case, you get cash prizes that can be multiplier-boosted, and a Gather symbol can be revealed as well. This triggers a respin, and all Mystery Gate symbols are sticky in the bonus round. Get 3+ sticky Mystery Gate symbols to turn them into Golden Chest symbols, and winup to 15,000x your stake.
The premium fish symbols pay between 4 and 15 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, andTrident Wild symbolsexpand to cover the full reel if this means that a win is created. The Wild, of course, steps in for any pay symbol to help complete and/or improve wins.
TheMystery Gate symbolsalways nudge fully in place to cover a full reel whenever they land partially in view, and after that these symbols reveal a random matching pay symbol or aGolden Chest symbol. If you land 3 Mystery Gate symbols at the same time they turn golden, and then the middle position spins to reveal a random pay symbol. Poseidon may upgrade the chosen symbol, and the chosen symbol pays even if the mystery symbols are not adjacent on the grid.
ThePoseidon Treasure featuretriggers when the Mystery Gate symbols reveal the Golden Chest symbol, and the Golden Chest symbols will then reveal either a Bronze, Silver, or Gold coin symbol. They can also reveal a Multiplier symbol or a Gather symbol, and this is how it works:
TheBonus Roundtriggers when you land3, 4, or 5 scattersin view, and this awards10, 12, or 14 free spins, respectively. All Mystery Gate symbols become sticky when they land, and they become golden chests when you have 3+ in view. Each reel comes with aReel Multiplierthat starts at x0, and golden temple symbols add +2, +3, +5, or +10 to the multiplier on the relevant reel or reels. The Reel Multipliers are added together before boosting wins. You cannot retrigger the bonus round, nor win extra spins, but thefeature can be purchased for 150x the stake. This option is not available in all jurisdictions, however, and not in the UK for sure.
You get an uneventful taste of the base game, before we purchase and trigger the bonus round at 0:45 into the 4:29-minute highlights video. We got the minimum of 3 triggering scatters, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.
This is only Backseat Gaming’s second release and they are already copycatting, which isn’t the best of signs, perhaps. Push Gaming’s Mystery Museum has been a decent success, and Commander of Tridents is also a decent alternative. It does add a few extras to the mix though, such as the Reel Multiplier system and the Poseidon’s Treasure feature. The latter doesn’t trigger too often though, and it seems a bit strange that Backseat wants to rub it in with that Razor Shark-like symbol.
As a standalone game Commander of Tridents is solid enough, but a budding studio should strive to find their own voice instead of blatantly copying the ideas of other developers. The Poseidon’s Treasure feature didn’t seem to trigger all that often, at least in our experience, but it can produce solid wins when it does. The bonus round is still your best bet when it comes to closing in on the15,000x potential, and Commander of Tridents is well worth checking out if you don’t care too much about the copycatting effort.
